The Story Behind Hinchliffe Brewing & Malting
Long before modern craft breweries became popular, brewing was deeply connected to family, community, and local culture. In Paterson, New Jersey, one name became part of that story, Hinchliffe Brewing.
Founded by John Hinchliffe during America’s industrial brewing era, the brewery grew into one of the largest brewing operations in Paterson. At a time when breweries served as gathering places for workers, families, and local communities, Hinchliffe Brewing became part of the city’s identity.
Then came Prohibition in 1920, a moment that changed American brewing forever. Like countless breweries across the country, Hinchliffe Brewing was forced to stop selling alcohol. Over time, the original operation disappeared, but the family story remained.
Today, generations later, the Hinchliffe legacy is returning in a new form.
Hinchliffe Brewing & Malting is now focused on heritage-inspired merchandise that celebrates history, craftsmanship, and classic American culture. From apparel and glassware to barware and home accessories, every collection is inspired by a story that began over a century ago.
As the brand continues to grow, future plans include brewing-inspired experiences, brew-your-own kits, and old-time recipe concepts that connect modern customers to historic brewing traditions.
The brewery may have changed with time, but the spirit behind it lives on.
